WHAT’S INSIDE

This is more than access to Andy Evansen’s “Watercolor for all Seasons” course. It’s an ongoing mentoring membership with Andy Evansen, designed to help you develop clarity and stronger judgment in your watercolor practice.

Watercolor can be incredibly rewarding — but it can also be frustrating. You may have experienced:

• Washes that turn muddy or dull
• Paintings that feel tighter than you intended
• Colors that don’t quite harmonize
• Scenes that feel busy or overwhelming
• A sense that something isn’t working — but you’re not sure why

You’re not alone. These challenges are common, even for experienced painters.

Through this membership, Andy gently guides you through the fundamentals that address these struggles at their root. You’ll learn how to judge value more clearly, simplify without losing strength, control moisture with greater confidence, and make thoughtful decisions before the brush ever touches the paper. More importantly, you’ll begin to understand why a painting works — and why it doesn’t.

Andy’s mentoring is not tied to a fixed timeline. Instead of rushing through material, you’re encouraged to absorb the concepts gradually, revisit lessons, and apply them as your skills evolve. Watercolor growth happens layer by layer, and this structure allows your understanding to deepen naturally over time.

Your access to Andy’s mentoring and course material continues as long as you remain an active member through either the yearly or monthly option. There is no pressure to “finish” — only steady progress.

We invite you to join us and discover why so many students remain long term. Growth here compounds. Andy’s mentoring is not built on tricks, shortcuts, or formulas — it’s grounded in strong fundamentals and thoughtful guidance. Students often say the greatest shift is that they stop feeling lost. Instead of guessing, they begin painting with a complete solution to their struggles.

If you’re ready to commit to meaningful progress in your watercolor practice, this may be the right next step. We would be honored to welcome you.

MODULE 1 | SKIES

Inside this module we will focus on the different types of washes used in watercolor; wet-in-wet, wet-on-dry, and dry-on-dry, or dry brush.  Knowing when to use each type is important in creating convincing landscapes.  The demonstration painting in this module has a large dramatic sky, and this was handled wet-into-wet as the paper was drying.  This can be the most difficult type of wash for students to master, and can lead to blooms and 'muddiness' if you're not judging the consistency of your puddles and dampness of your paper correctly.  I'll also cover the importance of judging the value of your wash as you lay it in depending on how much drying it has to do.  Lastly I'll discuss how to create texture and movement with dry brush, and how to handle foregrounds in your work.

MODULE 2 |VALUE STUDIES

Value studies help us to simplify and find connections. The process starts with how to judge color as value, something that many students struggle with.  Color is obvious to most but seeing its correct value can make the difference between a successful painting and a visually confusing one. I'll be talking about drawing, and ways to speed up the process by concentrating on the large shapes as well as the importance of leaving things like trees and shadows, what I refer to as 'free form' shapes, to your brushwork.  We'll also cover negative shape making, an under appreciated aspect unique to watercolor due to its transparency.

MODULE 3| COMPOSITION

This is when we will cover the importance of designing your painting through values, and ways to create a more dynamic painting when there aren't many shapes to deal with. Too often we find ourselves a slave to the reference photo, and there are simple ways to improve your subject that are much easier to see first with a value study.  I will also cover the importance of having an area of interest and ways to keep the rest of your painting from distracting from it. I will then illustrate these points with a winter scene demonstration where I'll also discuss the color of snow and touch on reflected light.

MODULE 4 | FIGURES

In this module, we'll focus on how to handle and place figures in various landscape paintings. It's important that people appear to be moving or at rest without overworking them, as they tend to draw enough attention as it is.  I discuss how to make sure your figures are incorporated into your painting from the start; too often figures appear as 'holes' in a painting, completely separate from their surroundings. I'll also be talking about how to simplify complex backgrounds so they don't compete with your mid and foreground. To wrap up, I will show you all of this in a demonstration plus how to mix more convincing greens without resorting to tube greens, and demonstrate a variety of ways to paint trees.

BONUS | CHOOSING A GOOD SUBJECT

Only students in this course receive this special bonus video - it’s not available for purchase anywhere.

In this 50-minute never-before-seen video, Andy shares how to choose a good subject to paint.

One of the most common mistakes students make has nothing to do with the actual painting process. Rather, it's choosing a subject that is either too much to handle, too 'pretty', or too vague, setting themselves up for failure or disappointment from the start. Andy wants to help eliminate this frustration for you.

In this video, Andy discusses what he looks for when choosing his subjects, and shows some examples of his work while describing why he painted them. You'll see his thought process and blueprint. He'll also talk about solutions to the problem of bad photographs and what you should be thinking about when selecting a good subject so you can finish with success.

You can download and save this video in a safe place. It's yours to keep as a takeaway when your course access ends.

MEET YOUR MENTOR
~ ANDY EVANSEN

Andy’s interest in art started in childhood, as he can’t recall a time when he wasn’t drawing. He began painting watercolors in the mid-1990s as a change of pace from his career as a medical illustrator. Choosing a ‘style’ was not difficult, as Andy was always inspired by the watercolor paintings of British artists Trevor Chamberlain, David Curtis, Ed Seago, and Edward Wesson, among others.

He found himself attempting to capture the landscape with the same economy of brushstroke, taking advantage of the luminosity of watercolors done in just a few washes. In addition, he was impressed with the way those artists seemed to capture everyday scenes in such a way that revealed a hidden beauty, subjects that many would simply pass by.

For Andy, watercolor is the perfect medium for capturing those beautiful, fleeting moments in time. Watercolor doesn't allow for much overworking. It's a very immediate, intuitive medium and I feel it's transparency is perfect for depicting light. I enjoy teaching and sharing these techniques with all my students.

The year I spent with Andy on the TAAO course was one of the best investments I have made in my painting practice. The breadth of the tutorial videos, as well as the critique sessions, was game-changing. If you’re looking to take your paintings to the next level under the mentorship of one of the best instructors out there, this course is for you.

Many artists will tell you they are lucky to find a great mentor to help them grow their craft. Andy is one of those exceptional artist mentors. And he’s a genuinely easy going, fun teacher, someone you enjoy spending time with. The online instruction is rich with tutorials, practice images, and many, I mean many, well-done videos of additional content and step-by-steps. It’s made my year and I feel so supported.

Let’s just start off by saying, “Wow and thank you, Andy.” I enrolled in this year long course to learn how to loosen up my watercolors. Little did I know, the course took me from the beginning of art...composition, value study, big shape, and so much more. Andy’s Step-by-Step lessons are my favorite. The other lesson that is now a part of my art is the value study, something that I dreaded at the beginning. After a month or so, I can see that they help me to see the big shapes. I thoroughly enjoy the private community that is included. Andy spends a lot of time here, encouraging and critiquing our posts with kindness and positivity. I highly recommend this course. Any time you have a chance to enroll in any workshop with him, do it. He is a true master artist and teacher.

Being a new artist, I was having trouble finding my way with my painting. I would have occasional small successes, but more often than not, my results were inconsistent and disappointing, to say the least. I had watched countless videos on the internet and read books but applying the knowledge was difficult. I knew that I needed some direction. I ran across TAAO online mentoring courses and enrolled right away with Andy. I’m beyond thrilled with his mentoring. My slow but steady progress encourages me to continue, and Andy’s feedback on my work is invaluable. I’m hooked!!!

DISCOVER WHY THIS COURSE IS DIFFERENT!

Many watercolor programs offer short-term instruction with an expiration date. This mentoring membership takes a different approach — allowing real growth to develop steadily over time.

Watercolor demands judgment in value, control of moisture, thoughtful color relationships, and the ability to simplify without overworking. These skills don’t develop quickly. They strengthen through repetition, reflection, and experienced guidance.

Andy teaches you how to read a scene clearly, establish strong value structure, unify your painting through a “mother wash,” and leave unnecessary detail behind. The fundamentals remain relevant wherever you are in your watercolor journey.

Because this is membership-based mentoring, you’re not pressured to rush through material before access ends. You can revisit lessons, reinforce concepts, and let your understanding deepen naturally as long as you remain an active member.

This is mentoring for painters who want steady, lasting improvement — not quick fixes.
