Randy is a California based artist who is nationally known for the use of color and expressive brushwork in his oil paintings of “everyday” scenes. He's a signature member of the Plein Air Painters of America (PAPA) and has also taught many students over the years how to be a “painter’s painter”. In his newest instructional video series, "Let Your Brush Sing! How to Push Paint to The Edge" you will learn how Randy paints difficult cityscapes in the spirit and manner of plein air - alla prima! In each start-to-finish video he will discuss and illustrate a variety of key principles. The Master Package includes three full length demonstrations. Randy has chosen three distinctly different subjects to highlight the key elements in each and support the tale of the story for the viewer.
In Painting Up-close and Personal Randy will discuss how painting a subject at close range can be treated much like a still-life or a portrait. The same challenges of editing and simplifying shapes come into play, but with different demands. A Harley Davidson parked in the shadows of a tree, provides the focus for dealing with highly reflective surfaces while in cool light. Randy employs an alternative block in with a “wipe-out” technique to carve out the important shapes of the motorbike, while he edits and merges shapes, and makes changes in the background. You will see in the end how a complicated form becomes painterly with bold brush handling.
In Street Level in San Francisco he will show you how to see the larger pattern of abstract shapes within a busy cityscape to develop a bold composition. Seeing the elements of a scene as the largest possible puzzle pieces is the key to dealing with the overwhelming amount of information presented. Randy shares a practical method for blocking in a painting in an “all-over” fashion in order to paint with more confident brushstrokes, handle value and color mixing, and to ease up on the many drawing challenges of the scene.
